I’m stretching my 60s Retrospective film reviews back a tad to include SIX-FIVE SPECIAL from 1958, a direct exploitation based on Britain’s first pop TV show. The outstanding performers are Lonnie Donegan, John Barry Seven and John Dankworth, but there are lots of “earlier” stars on there too. Worth watching, or just look at the photos in the review.

Don Lang sang the signature song for the TV show, and he did a very creditable rendition of Leroy Van Dyke’s The Auctioneer (which is on Youtube). Joan Regan (as recorded in Spencer Leigh’s Independent obit) once resisted the advances of Salvador Dali in a New York Hotel. Good for her.

I’ve been expanding this for my forthcoming website on record collecting (mainly). Bob Cort Skiffle Group did the version of the theme which they used for the first few months, and then as skiffle was fading, they switched to a new recording by Don Lang. The film credits that version to Geoff Love Orchestra.
