ELT articles can be found on our website under ARTICLES. They will gradually be transferred here.
In posting them in a batch, I’m very aware that certain points and themes recur again and again. These articles were written over fifteen years, for different publications, and were never meant to be read as a continuous whole. So I repeat myself on accents, stress, names in textbooks, pronunciation, beginner syllabuses, how I started teaching and so on.
Some bits are out of date. More often, afterthoughts have been added in 2010 as I check each article, because other points come to mind. They’re often slightly longer than the originals anyway, because they were edited to fit a page or column in a magazine. It’s not that I’m rejecting the editing so much as that the file I have on computer is the original one I submitted.
Reading them all together, I feel like the central character in Mario Vargas Llosa’s novel, Aunt Julia & The Scriptwriter. He was attempting to write several different daily radio soap opera simultaneously, and kept letting the themes that obsessed him appear again and again across the storylines. My apologies whenever I do the same.
The regular THINK TANK series at ELT News in Japan has run monthly discussion group articles, including contributions by me, Marc Helgesen, Chuck Sandy, Curtis Kelly, Chris Hunt and guests.
Other articles will be added here, and gradually articles will migrate from the website to this blog.
