Link to the New Vic’s touring production of Around The World in 80 Days, seen at Salisbury Playhouse. This is vibrant, imaginative physical theatre with a cast of eight playing 125 characters. Michael Hugo as Passepartoute gives the comic performance of the year.

A review added of the second King Lear in two and a bit weeks. This King Lear is with Ian McKellen at Chichester’s Minerva Theatre, (LINKED) one of the hottest theatre tickets of the year.

Review added of a magnificent production of Christopher Marlowe’s early play, Dido, Queen of Carthage (LINKED) at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre. It looks gorgeous. Beautifully performed too. More exciting than the Shakespeare on next door too.

Review of the 2017 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Coriolanus (LINKED) added.  Sope Dirisu as Coriolanus in a modern dress production.

Review of Florian Zeller’s “The Lie”  (FOLLOW THIS LINK) at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Southwark. Translated by Christopher Hampton. This was a preview performance. It’s the companion piece to last year’s The Truth with four superb actors. You’ll be knocked out if it’s new to you, though if you have seen the counterpart, the plot won’t hold many surprises.

Review of Boudica by Tristan Bernays at The Globe Theatre. This is what The Globe does so well. Full of action and interaction.  A lively production of the story of the British queen who fought the Roman invaders. Full of implications, too.

Review of this year’s Globe production of King Lear I rarely do harsh reviews. This one is an exception.

Review of Titus Andronicus at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, starring David Troughton in the title role. We were left with very mixed feelings. Some was stunning, especially the acting from all the principals. But some bits fell flat. Fascinating modern dress production.

An illustrated article added on the question of Civil War Statues.  (LINKED) It started as a discussion elsewhere, then I was asked the very good question: Do losers in civil wars have statues? I looked at Britain to compare. Well, sometimes they do survive as a resting place for seagulls.

A belated light-hearted review of Passengers, (LINKED) with Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt and Michael Sheen. It’s way into the DVD racks and out of the cinemas, but I found it fun. We have Jim (Jim Kirk?), Aurora (Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty?) and Arthur (Arthur Dent?) … seen here in the sumptuous bar on the starship Avalon. So, yes, there are a lot of references.
