Love At The Greek – Neil Diamond
Neil Diamond’s second live double album. He got an unfair ride from rock snob critics overall. This review takes in Hot August Night, Beautiful Noise and his performance on The Band’s The Last Waltz. Both Beautiful Noise and Love At The Greek were produced by Robbie Robertson, and no one seems to point out the close chronological proximity between the two live shows, Love At The Greek and The Last waltz. I include musings on the point of live albums in general.

Hi Peter – Hope you’re doing well and I really love that you’re still at it with your writings.
I saw NL at the Greek back then; I can’t recall if it was one of these though. My girlfriend at the time was a big fan. I wasn’t impressed, bored actually. But I wasn’t objective and likely had a bit of developing snobbery going on too.
I think, at that time, I was really into the jam bands of that era, particularly the Allman Bros & more blues based stuff. But that was on me, my youth and a lack of musical sophistication.
Thanks again for doing this work – I read every one!

Heard and saw Neil Diamond a few years ago in Zurich. Amazing, this man and his crew. Wonderful songs and atmosphere in a packed Stadium with a decent audience. Unforgettable. Cannot understand why he was put down as ” a crooner”, mainly in the eighties at least in Switzerland.
