Review of the NT Live broadcast of Hamlet starring Maxine Peake in the title role. This Manchester Royal Exchange production also cast women as Polonius (Polonia), the gravediggers, Guildenstern and the Player King. It was considerably more post-edited than earlier NT Live filmed plays. That’s three major Shakespeare tragedies close together! I need a rest …

Review added of John Ford’s The Broken Heart, Wanamaker Playhouse at The Globe. Caroline drama from around 1629, another production in this incredible intimate reconstruction of a Jacobean indoor theatre. Unknown

Review added of The Ruling Class, by Peter Barnes. Not only one of my favorite plays, but one of the greatest plays of its era. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, with James McAvoy in the lead role. Five stars.
