Review of The Dave Clark Five in Catch Us If You Can (1965) in the 60s Retrospective series. While the debt to A Hard Day’s Night is obvious, it was a successful film in its own right (retitled Having A Wild Weekend in the USA). Dave Clark chose the director (It was John Boorman’s first feature film) and screenwriter, Peter Nichols. Barbara Ferris co-starred. Black and white, and very unusually it’s a comedy chase drama, with a Dave Clark Five soundtrack, but no songs are performed, sung or mimed on film.

“Why did the US insist on re-titling British pop movies?” It’s Trad, Dad! (1958, so just outside your remit) was re-titled Ring-A-Ding Rhythm in the US. It sounds pretty naff, but it’s a quote from the film’s closing song, and in this case the UK title would have been incomprehensible to Americans. But I do wonder what kind or size of an audience these films would have attracted across the pond.

Yet again I forgot to enable comments on the review. I moved your comment there – It’s Trad Dad was 1962. It’s unavailable in the British version.

Oops! I’m wondering now how I made that mistake. Helen Shapiro in ’58??

It was Helen Shapiro who caused me to know the date. I have the LP, and I even made up a CDR with the LP plus the tracks from “non-EMI” artists from the film – the LP only has EMI artists. The trouble with the American version is they almost always re-edited and messed about with American versions.
