Review added of the 2023 Jamie Lloyd production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s SUNSET BOULEVARD (follow the link). Actually we didn’t see the acclaimed and award winning Nicole Scherzinger, but the ‘alternative’ for selected shows, Rachel Tucker. It was still a five star production and a total re-think of the concept.

Review of the current production of KING LEAR (click link to review)directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh. This is the two hour non-stop all-action Lear set in Ancient Britain. It’s very different. Read the review

Short review of ‘Seeta’s Rite’ concert by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra with an Indian dance ballet Rite of Spring in the programme. Mainly it’s about the “Rite of Spring.”

Follow the link to my review of Natalie Merchant at Bath Forum on Saturday 11th November. It was a phenomenal concert, starting at 8 and we got back in the night air outside at 11.30. With her string quartet and amazing musicians, it ranks among the best shows I’ve seen in many years. Read the review.

Review of Norah Jones at Bath Forum on Friday 19th November (LINKED HERE). A great concert. Read the review.

I haven’t done many album reviews recently, but I’m making an exception for Van Morrison’s new one, Accentuate the Positive. (LINKED). I’ve put it on my Around and Around site, not here. I’ll migrate the album reviews over there eventually. It’s very detailed on the sources of the 19 classic cover versions.

My exhaustive, not to say exhausting labours on Around and Around reach the Stateside-Dunhill label (FOLLOW THE LINK). It was the short-lived (1968-1970) outlet for the US Dunhill label and produced several classic albums. Apart from Easy Rider OST, Mama Cass, Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night it released two almighty ‘lost masterpieces’. They were ‘Sunshower’ by Thelma Houston (which Jimmy Webb rates as his best recording) and ‘Wolfking of LA’ by John Phillips.

Barbie- review

Review of ‘Barbie’ (FOLLOW LINK TO REVIEW) at shorter than my normal length. Comments welcome. It was an ironic and kitsch visual delight, and with great dancing. I still can’t work out who they saw as the audience though.

Stateside

The latest record collector article at AROUND & AROUND is on Stateside (follow link). EMI”s 1962-1974 catch-all label for smaller American labels. There is some great stuff on Stateside from soul to soundtracks and it’s good-looking stuff too. Heavily illustrated. Go for the eye candy alone.

This was The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra with a concept concert. Joe Stilgoe and Mark McGann act and sing as John Lennon & Paul McCartney, aided by Claire Martin on vocals. They are backed by the BSO with a new symphonic arrangement by Andrew Cottee. FOLLOW THE LINK TO THE REVIEW. It’s very interesting for any Beatle fan, as well as showcasing different arrangements built around the story.
