Review of The Demon Barbers added here. Follow the link. Another great evening of new English folk at Forest Arts in New Milton.

Review of the “Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory” production of Two Gentlemen of Verona (linked here) added. It’s a pity to review it right at the end of its tour, but good to see a lesser-known play in performance.

Review of the biopic of Paul Raymond, The Look of Love, added. This stars Steve Coogan as Raymond and Imogen Poots as his daughter. It’s not an edifying tale.

The Hot House

Review of The Hot House by Harold Pinter in the Trafalgar Transformed Season, with Simon Russell-Beale and John Simm added.

Sloppy Fiction

The ever-growing article on Sloppy Fiction (linked here) has two new paragraphs at the end. One on Dan Brown’s Inferno, and I suspect this will grow as I listen to more of the audio CDs in the car. The other on Tracy Chevalier’s The Last Runaway where I thought there was an error, but I was totally wrong.

Othello

Review of the National Theatre production of Othello added. This is set in a military base in 2013, an example of a high-concept modern location for Shakespeare working perfectly.

Review of Spiers & Boden in the Back Yard Songs Tour added. See link. On their Back Yard Songs Tour they agreed they would do some purely local songs which were new to them in each venue on the tour. A truly exhilerating evening of English folk at its very best.

Released today in the UK, and The Great Gatsby is reviewed here. This review is really out on a limb … it’s actually positive among the rush of bad reviews the film is picking up. I liked it.

Review added of Roger McGough’s version of The Misanthrope. This was truly “The Misanthrope without Alceste” as the lead role had to be replaced by an actor reading aloud from the handheld script. This makes it hard to judge the intrinsic quality of McGough’s script, but our conclusion, in spite of ecstatic reviews elsewhere, was “an interesting production, with good ideas, of a poor version of the play.”
