Dunsinane

Review of the National Theatre of Scotland RSC production of Dunsinane is linked here.  The play is set in the 11th century Scotland of Macbeth, but is transparently actually about Afghanistan or Syria now.

Review of Crosby, Stills & Nash in Bournemouth, 5th October 2013, the first date on their UK tour. See link. A chance to see three all-time greats, still keeping on, and still in fine voice.

Review of the Globe on Tour production of Henry VI: Three Plays. Unfortunately it’s reviewed at Bath, indoors at the end of a summer of touring which included several outdoor shows.  We saw all three plays in a day, under their original Elizabethan titles: Harry  The sixth, The Houses of York and Lancaster, The True tragedy of The Duke of York. Only in 1623 did they get retitled Henry VI Parts 1, 2 and 3.

I’ve added a copy of my review of “The Beautiful Old” album  (REVIEW LINKED) from The Band website here. This is a truly wonderful album, curating songs from 100 years ago in modern versions by major artists such as Richard Thompson, Graham Parker, Christine Collister and Garth Hudson.

Review of What Maisie Knew added to the Films section. An excellent, well-constructed, beautifully written and acted movie, updating the Henry James story to the modern day, with Maisie’s mother as a rock star.

The Old Vic production looks great on paper: Mark Rylance directing James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave in Much Ado About Nothing at the Old Vic (see link). The result is one of the dullest, most misguided Shakespeare plays I’ve ever seen.

Review of the Globe Theatre production of a Midsummer Night’s Dream 2013 added. A great production, seen just six days after the Grandage production.

Reds 2

Review of Reds 2 added (linked here). It’s a generic shoot-em-up with the best actors Hollywood can buy slumming it for the money. But Malkovitch, Parker and Willis are funny.
