Harper (60s retrospective review)

The occasional reviews of classic films of the 60s continue with Paul Newman in Harper from 1966. (FOLLOW LINK TO REVIEW) This one gets listed as a homage to film noir, hence the inclusion of Lauren Bacall, but it’s in vivid technicolour, and to me it really hasn’t stood up to the passing of time.

This send up version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Sh!t Faced Shakespeare has the story that one cast member has to drink for four hours before the show, then the cast have to work around them. Hmm. Don’t believe a word. They reduce the play to just the story of the four lovers. Follow link to review.

Review added of “Tangomotion” at Poole Lighthouse last night. (FOLLOW LINK) Billed as dance theatre (or under “Dance” in the theatre brochure). It was often just the music of Tango Siempre, so not dancing throughout, but when there as it was spectacular. The music was intriguing.

Review of Van Morrison at the Bournemouth International Centre, 21st October 2019. A tremendous set which spanned his career, and more importantly was a very early outing for songs from his new album, which is due out on Friday 25th.

P.P. Arnold 2019 review

Just posted my long review of P.P. Arnold at Newbury yesterday. (LINKED) This is the tour supporting ‘The New Adventures of P.P. Arnold’ album. Steve Cradock of Ocean Colour Scene and Paul Weller fame leads the band. Lots from the new album, but her classics too. Undiminished power from Britain’s best soul singer.

King John – RSC 2019 review

Review added of KING JOHN by William Shakespeare (linked), at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford. This is King John with attitude, set in a mid-60s alternative universe, with Rose sheehy as King John. It’s on a long run. Even if you can’t see it, look at the photos in the review. A great RSC production.

Rocketman- review

A somewhat belated review of the Elton John biopic ROCKETMAN (follow link) to coincide with its DVD release. I’m afraid the musicologist in me takes over and I spent too much time noting inaccuracies. Well, the promotions do say “based on a true fantasy.”
