Three films in a week? Well, it’s a cold damp January, there’s nothing on TV (except Wolf Hall) and the cinema is full of great stuff at the moment. Every trailer makes us whisper, ‘Must see that.’ So on to Ex-Machina (linked) directed and scripted by Alex Garland. Novelist turns screenwriter turns director. Go for it!

Revised review added of Boyhood for the Oscar season, with added comparisons to other contenders. Basically, I do not think it’s “one of the best films of the last decade” though it is one of the most interesting concepts.

Review of Birdman (Or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) added (SEE LINK). It got the Zanuck Best Picture award today, usually a precursor of Oscar success. It deserves it. A great film in every department.
