Sloppy Fiction

The ever-growing article on Sloppy Fiction (linked here) has two new paragraphs at the end. One on Dan Brown’s Inferno, and I suspect this will grow as I listen to more of the audio CDs in the car. The other on Tracy Chevalier’s The Last Runaway where I thought there was an error, but I was totally wrong.

Othello

Review of the National Theatre production of Othello added. This is set in a military base in 2013, an example of a high-concept modern location for Shakespeare working perfectly.

The Great Gatsby

Released today in the UK, and The Great Gatsby is reviewed here. This review is really out on a limb … it’s actually positive among the rush of bad reviews the film is picking up. I liked it.

The Misanthrope

Review added of Roger McGough’s version of The Misanthrope. This was truly “The Misanthrope without Alceste” as the lead role had to be replaced by an actor reading aloud from the handheld script. This makes it hard to judge the intrinsic quality of McGough’s script, but our conclusion, in spite of ecstatic reviews elsewhere, was “an interesting production, with good ideas, of a poor version of the play.”
